I am using a low spec desktop so can't really give a fair test. But, I have loaded Wine into my Xubuntu(Linux) system. Then installed MapMaker using the Wine program loader.
I have just done some of the basics but it seems to run ok. The other alternative I have seen is some software called VirtualBox. This in effect lets you have a Windows OS running on a Linux machine or visa-versa. So, if you had a Linux system running you could in effect have a full blown Windows system running in virtual mode. Then just run MapMaker in there.
At the moment I am not totally convinced about Wine. I have tried to install some other software and it won't install the software from CD. Also tried some other software which is acting strangely. But, this might be down to the machine I am using.
I think that possibly the VirtualBox solution could be a better option for long term use. Its a matter of making the decision that a Lunux system will do most of your work ok, Then possibly the VirtualBox would offer the ability to run Windows software?
