Hi, I am sure this will have been discussed before, but couldn't find it.
Is it possible to create a map with an OS projection, but with latitude and longitude scales on the frame borders, instead of the XY metres scales?
Does the map need to be plotted as raw latitudes and longitudes instead?
Thanks, Phil S |

It is easily done if you know how to edit a template. First create a template of the appropriate size you wish to print or call up an existing template using File/Page Templates/Edit Template. Right click in the main map frame and click on the Edit Frame button in the dialogue box.click on "Include collar round frame" and set a border width of at least 6 mm.click on the Grid tab and set the option to "No grid and no numbers". Click on the Lat/Long tab and set the graticule type to solid or dotted lines, whichever you choose and also set the graticule interval to whichever you choose. You can also set an imperial scale bar and select what text you want to display. If you save the template and and then select it when you come to print your map it will print with Lat Long scales in the border.
You can leave the map in OS or any other projection. That will not make any difference.

Thank you Irvine, but that is the type of thing I have been trying. Although there are no XY numbers or grid, the axes (frame) and tick marks for them are still there. Also, there is a curious effect where the ticks and numbers for the top and bottom longitude scales extend beyond the right hand side of the template (and map). For info, I have set the panel to 160 mm wide and 135 mm high.
You can see the result at http://www.gla.ac.uk/centres/marinestation/temp/scotland_map_lat-long.pdf
I do not wish a collar; I would like the map to have one border with a lat/long scale. Is this possible with MapMaker?
Thanks, Phil S |

I don't know of any way to put a scale around a map in MapMaker without a collar.
I suggest that on the dialogue box for Grid you set the grid interval to 5,000,000 and the minor grid divisions to none. That should get rid of the metric scale tick marks.
The extended scale beyond the frame I cannot duplicate so I cannot suggest how to get rid of it. You could try to create a new template from scratch to see if that cures the problem.

Thanks Irvine. I can hide most of the frame border by setting the collar width to 1 mm (it won't let me set it to zero), but it gives me different numbers of border lines on different sides (two on left and top; four on right and bottom) and I still get the scales extending beyond the map.
Also, I have set the label size in the 'grid' dialogue, but the longitude labels are smaller than the latitude labels and now only appear along the top border.
It looks as though there just isn't the control over the placement, increments and size of latitude and longitude scales necessary for what I would like to achieve.
Thanks for your suggestions, Phil. |

It is a bit laborious but one work around would be to manually write the Lat/Long scales around the inside of the border of your map as text and then, when you go to print, chose the Simple option rather than the template. The only drawback is the scales would then appear in print on the inside of the border rather than the outside.
If that is not suitable then you could draw a rectangle around your map a little inside the edge of where your print border will be, mark on the scales outside the rectangle and then print choosing the Simple option and select No Border from the drop down list under Border Style.

Thanks again Irvine. What I have done is create vectors of latitude and longitude for my map area (by generating lots of points in Excel), convert them to OS coordinates, then plot them directly onto the map. As you suggested, I have labelled these lines with text on the map and used a simple frame. The result can be seen at: http://www.gla.ac.uk/centres/marinestation/temp/scotland_lat-long_lines.pdf
It works for that particular view, but I would need to move the labels and possibly create new lines for a different view. Anyway, a good workaround for the time being.
