I need to display the direction of a GPS track. There doesn't seem to be a line style option with arrows on the line. I can draw them on but that is tedious, any solutions out there please?
One option is to go Project Manager/Project style set. Select an arrow as the symbol for the line style you are using then set the line type to "symbol line". Click on the Effects tab and set the symbol orientation to "Symbol vertical axis follows line" and set centre line to "Solid line below". If you go back to the "Line Type" tab you can set the symbol spacing to whatever you think suitable.
that's great thanks. I found that 'flow direction' symbol in cartographic symbols does the job nicely. But is there a way to modify the colour/width of the solid line beneath?
No sorry but the centre line option is fixed width, however there is a work around. Load the .dra file with your GPS track into the project twice using a different style for each. On the lower of the two layers choose a style with a plain solid line and set the colour and line width you want. On the upper layer chose a style with a symbol line but set the centre line option to none.
Thanks for help. That's a useful solution though I don't think I can show it correctly in the legend?
Also realised that the 'current flow' arrows point the wrong way! So I drew my own arrow and saved it as a symbol but it has a white block around it which I can't make transparent. So now I'm using the standard triangle symbol, though it's not ideal.
Use 'chain dimension line' under the Tools menu/drawing/dimensions/simple. Or when you draw/edit a line goto the 'actions' tab and click Convert line to 'chain dimension line'. Just ensure you have drawn the line in the direction you want the arrow. There is a selection of arrows to choose from uder the various styles.
To avoid the white background when making a symbol, before saving the symbol go to File - Project manager - Project information - Extent, and there un-tick the "with background colour" box.
