I am trying to generate 500metre buffers around 473 polygons. I keep getting the error message "load source failed" followed by "save source failed". If I OK rather than abort, I find that buffer zones have been created for some but not all the polygons. I am running 8GB of RAM, so presumably not short of memory? |

Hi John,
It is memory related. Use the selection tool to do the same action but then in smaller sections.

Thanks, Hanno. I thought I was safe with 8GB of RAM! I tried splitting the file but I end up with overlapping buffers at the margins, which defeats the object. Is there no other workaround? |

Hello John
Yes, 8Mb should be more than enough, my word, that is more than I am using!!
When I compared MM to ArcView and MapInfo I find that MM’s programing is very concise and most comprehensive; build to perform even on very old development world computer systems. But what I meant with ‘memory related’ is that I have noticed that with some huge ‘bulk’ operations, there is a limit in the amount of calculations MM does in one sweep. Some sort of internal ‘cache’. Mind you: I am no programmer, this is just how I perceive this. For normal work I never hit this limit, it is only when I (as a power user) push MM to its utmost limits (processing large chucks of the UK in one go). And when I encounter that, I use the selection tool to work in smaller portions.
You asked for a work-a-round to tackle overlapping buffers: Use the live layer action tools (or indeed the selection manager when processing half of the UK on one go!) Basic operations, convert polygons to lines Tidying, Tidy line junctions (spaghetti processing) Polygon manipulations, convert lines to polygons.
You have now created a new polygon set where the overlap has become a separate polygon.
There are more actions one could do to polish up this set further but then one would first have to create a database of the initial buffer zones or retain previous copies of the dataset and make use of the ‘Spatial queries’ to inherit data (eg. styles), so that you then can make use of other Polygon manipulation tools to merge unwanted polygons away again (or delete them).
