I'm only today beginning to look at the data available, is there going to be more? I hope so because otherwise all we have so far as I can see is a partial release of datasets derived from the OS primary/raw data rather than the raw data itself.
I'm sure you've downloaded the contour data Nick - when imported into MM, how do I rid the draw file (or the original data file) of the highly annoying and useless to me 'trademark' title and the useless footer advising of scale etc, also how to rid the data or draw file of the gridlines? Mike |

I haven't worked this out yet, Mike, I'm still going through the manual:
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/products/landformpanorama/pdf/Land-Form_PANORAMA_user_guide.pdf
On the face of it, it should just be a question of switching-off a layer, but I'm not sure.
Added later: this seems to do the trick. Turn off layers G8040571, G8040572 and G8040573.
There is some quite interesting mid-scale vector and raster mapping in the pipeline, see:

Thanks Nick, turning off layer 0 rids the draw of header and footer text.
I like the tif examples, I see also the postcode data is on there and no doubt many here will welcome it. More to come from OS then, what else would you like to see opened up Nick? They must have a vast aerial photo archive, that'd be very useful to some but I doubt it has a high priority their end. Cheers, Mike |

Above anything else, public rights-of-way as vectors!

The OP asked us how we feel about the release by OS of this Open Data mapping.
I have used Gratis now for about five years or so and for me the fact that we can now get fairly accurate base mapping free of charge from OS makes it worthwhile me upgrading to MM Pro for the rubber banding and other map validation features. I also welcome the release of Panorama data as, once I get the hang of using it, I will find that extremely beneficial for my current research into mine drainage and the outfall adit levels relative to the overlying surface contours.
My main GIS use in research over the past five years has been with base mapping assembled from a mosaic of Victorian 6" series sheets via a two step sourcing process; firstly making a photocopy of the old OS out of copyright Victorian paper editions in the public library then a scan. As you can guess there is some stretching over and above the original survey anomalies now rectified by the recent OS' PAI initiative. Awaiting delivery of my order but am expecting to be able to use the released Street View to get my mosaics a lot more accurate.
For me the fact I can get this level of accuracy in a free of charge base map is a massive breakthrough. As an unfunded free-lance researcher the previous licensing and pricing structure quoted by OS made use of their electronic data in a GIS system unaffordable. I can now get to the stage of having the equivalent of their OS Old Maps database in my GIS for the cost of an MM Pro licence upgrade. If my memory of their quote of a year or two ago is correct compared to the purchasing of the OldMaps/historic data from OS that gives me a break even pay back point of around 3 months for year one and then no further annual licence fees.
So massive announcement from OS and greatly welcomed. All I have to do now is learn the new skills of handling the released data once I get it and then upgrade my copy of MM to Pro.

We have now added a UK postcode finder utility making use of the new free data from the OS. See http://www.mapmaker.com/postcodes.htm.
In addition, we have modified the DXF import so that when importing the OS Panorama contours the contour heights, and spot height values, are assigned to the caption of the relevant lines and points. When importing these DXF files you should select the layers G8040200, G8040201, G8040202, and G8040204. |

The OS VectorMap District raster mapping has now appeared on the OS OpenData site. Same link as above.

Quoting an old post, I'm having a small problem with this, I can load all the post codes of an area and use the goto object id function, which does not place a marker, but if I use the utility, even though it does seem to load the .csv data it always puts the marker on the false origin SV00. |
