I am a complete beginner with MM. I followed Hanno's Step by Step Instructions with the sample OrthoPhoto & Basemap. All went well.

The mapping I hope to do is on 1:1250 OS so to experiment with I bought a small amount of OS data as .dxf.

I went to
File
Add Layer
and selected the .dxf file.

I can see nothing on the screen although the file name appears on the project bar. Am I making a basic error or being a numpty?

Hello Sharon,

Could you edit your DXF file with the Notepad, delete the $EXTMIN and $EXTMAX lines (16 lines), save it as a new file and give it a try?
Other option : import the DXF file and convert it to a DRA file (Utilities - Vector utilities - etc. - Ignore DXF bounding box = Yes)?
Bon courage!

The second method worked, thank you very much Philippe.

For future reference, what is the best file format to purchase OS data for use with Mapmaker? I had thought that .dxf would import directly.

Although I have a full version I've not needed to use MM for a while but will need UK location maps again plus my bespoke overlay data for my next project. Like Sharon (pavonia) I also struggled in the past to get the OS Open Data to load and display and in the end used scanned out of copyright paper maps for my base data.

Could someone please write a simple guide to help infrequent users get this data loaded and displayed correctly with the stanadard OS colours etc., or if it already exists give us a web-link to it.

You surprise me!

If you go on the MM website and to the home page you will see that MM have created all of the UK as OS tiles. Follow these steps:

1 Below the 'Software for Africa' box (in bright red) there is a Paragraph that starts Free UK base map data. Find the word 'here' at the end of that paragraph, and click it.
2 You will find yourself in the 'Download' page, click the 'Download' tab at the top.
3 You will see the OS tiles for all of the UK (not Ireland)
4 Click the general area that you are interested in
5 Choose the OS tile you want.
6 It is automatically downloaded to your machine as a ZIP file
7 Create a new Directory and call it OS tiles
8 Open the new directory (OS Tiles) and create a new folder with the name of the tile using ONLY the two letters and two numbers that make up the name of the tile NT64 for example
9 Go to the ZIP file in Explorer and click 'extract all' then navigate to the new directory (NT64 in this case) and make it the directory for the extraction

You now have the OS tile on your machine.

1 Open your project or create a new one
2 Press spacebar, and choose 'Add layer'
3 At the very bottom box of the screen you are taken to change the 'Files of type' to Tagged Image File Format (*.tif)
4 Navigate to the 'OS Tiles' directory, and open up the NT64 folder
5 You should only see NT64.tif (If you see more than that no matter) just choose the NT64.tif file

The OS plan will open up into your mapmaker project.

If you can't quite see your point of interest, change the scale to 50 000 and you will see more.

Tip: You may have to download more than one OS tile for your map. You merely add as many tiles as you need into the one project.

Hope this helps.

Mark

Thanks for that.

i'd not needed MM since last spring and I'd looked on the documents tab for a guide there. Also now noticed the manual has been updated since I last checked the site so will have a look there too for tips.

Will try the MM download tiles instead of the stuff I got direct from OS. I had no problem with the raster maps from OS it was the vector that made no sense.

Update - have also been back to the OS website looking for guidance. I see that most of the map tiles etc., I obtained have been replaced with new versions with OS now saying that first lot were beta versions I plan to scrap the original downloads and start afresh.

Thanks for the tips offered earlier.
