I have a map (created on Map Maker)which is on UTM projection but shows latitude and longitude for the cursor. I have units set to metres and hectares in both the programme and the project. But the scale bar shows minutes and the tape or perimeter of a polygon both show mm on paper not metres on the ground. Area shows hectares.
How can I get the measurements and scale bar to show metres on the ground?

Hello Margaret,

Looks like it's a WGS84 lat/long file.

Would you get through the following steps ?
1) create the relevent UTM projection, say UTM35S-WGS84?
Utilities - Latitude and Longitude utilities - Create projection...Projection system = UTM zone 35, check the UTM southern hemisphere option, Datum = WGS84

2) convert the file from WGS84 lat/long to the newly created UTM35S-WGS84 projection :
Utilities - Latitude and Longitude utilities - WGS84 Lat/Long file to XY...

3) then make sure that the projection system and datum of the project are ok :
Project manager - Project information - Projection...

and then see whether things get better or not.

Last step might be : File - View in Google Earth.

Bon courage.

Philippe

Related question.

When using historic data I've set the utilities to yards and square yards but the tape measure still shows up as metres as does the buffer zone around a symbol point. Can these also be set to display in yards or are they always a metric figure?

John,
Project manager - Project information - Units
yds = Unit for linear measurement
sq. yards = Unit for areas
should solve your pb.
Regards.

Thanks for that Philippe. I thought I'd done that in system set up yesterday so I will give I it a retry on next job.

Using metres gave me a ' near enough' buffer zone answer for yesterday's job but I was surprised after setting yards in set up to only be offered the option to set up the buffer zone circle in metres.

PS - now retested and issue resolved. I didn't actually change anything today other than that I'd restarted PC & MapMaker so maybe the restart step is also required to activate the units change.
