Another 3 [probably] simple questions! But I have looked through the manual and also searched the forum to no avail for similar queries.
[1] I am mapping old properties using the original dimensions as described rather than current fencelines. So I would like to measure each boundary as I draw and 'drop' the points of the polygon. After trying both it appears to me that you can EITHER use the tape measure OR draw a polygon but not both at the same time. Is it possible to measure the sides as I draw a polygon?
[2] Ideally I would like to be able to plot these original boundaries on an old OS map [scanned as bmp & uploaded] then remove the scanned background map and overlay the map layer to modern OS data inserted behind to show any discrepancies between original and current boundaries. Is this possible?
[3] I want to label each property with a unique number assigned by me. When I complete the polygon I am getting no dialogue box asking to specify the label text. What have I done wrong?
1 Draw the polygon and right click to complete it 2 When you complete it you should see a dialogue box with three tabs at the top: 'Basics' 'Styles' & 'Actions' 3 Click Basics and you should see two boxes 'Display Label' and 'Object ID' 4 Leave 'Object ID' alone and select 'Display Label' and change it to what you want.
If you have got an existing ploygon then follow thes steps:
1 Make the layer live 2 Click the 'Edit' button at the LH side 3 Double click on the the ploygon; you should see a blue turquoise circle appear in the middle, a box appear around the whole polygon and ON THE BOTTOM RH CORNER of the box an 'i' 4 Click on the 'i' and you should follow the steps from '3' above.
Go to Files/System Set Up/Preferences/Editing and in the dialogue box tick the box marked "Show line length and angle" Now when you draw a line you will see the length and angle on the screen as you draw. You can draw a line around the boundary of your polygon using the dimensions you wish. Make sure you have finished back on the node where you started. You can then use the Flood tool to create a polygon to fill the shape of the lines you have drawn. Remember to delete the line when you have finished.
You can plot the polygons on a scanned OS map but first you will have to calibrate the scan using Utilities/Bitmap Utilities/Calibrate Scan. Then when you switch on the layer with your modern OS map your polygons will be in the right place. I am assuming that the modern OS map is digital data that is geo-referenced.
That's so helpful Irvine, thank you very much. I will experiment with the calibration of a scanned 1900 1:2500 map tonight then with the 'show length and angle' technique for measuring boundaries.
The OS data will be .dxf files which I assume is geo-referenced.
