It is a peculiarity of Ordnance Survey GML files (MasterMap) that the bounding box (the geographic extent) as described in the file's header can be substantially smaller that the actual extent of the data. This is particulary pronounced in small extracts. This meant that when Map Maker imported GML files it could ignore and loose some of the polygons around the edge. Map Maker has now been modified so that none of the data is lost. |

Map Maker has been modified to cope better with large JPG images which before could result in a "bitmap refresh failed" message.
Note that when using large colour images, such as aerial photos, we recommend using ECW files since they load much faster. When using large (or small) black and white images, such as scanned paper maps, we recommend using TIF images (one-bit monochrome or 8-bit grayscale). JPG and ECW give poor results for black and white images. |

Ordnance Survey GML files (MasterMap) should include a bounding box in the header. It has been found that some files are missing this data, so Map Maker has been modified to cope with such files. |

DXF files are meant to have a header which lists all the layers used in the DXF file. Some dont. Some list layers that are different from those actually used. Map Maker has been modified so that when DXF files are imported, if no layers are selected then all layers will be imported irrespective of whether the layers are listed in the header. |

1. Yesterdays TIFF error fixed.
2. If the "embankment" effect is chosen for a line, and the line is given a width in "metres on the ground", then then width of the embankment will now also be in metres on the ground.
3. Increasingly, people are putting MM and MM projects on USB memory sticks. Since there is no telling what drive letter will be assigned when an USB device is used there can be confusion if MM finds a style file on another drive of a name which was previously assigned to a diffent USB device. Now MM always looks for the project style file on the drive currently used by the project. |

Under "Edit - Live layer options" a new option has been added: "Show label locators when editing". By default this option is ticked, but if you untick it then when editing an object in the live layer the circular label locator will be hidden making it easier to edit the actual object. Otherwise, in some sitiations, such as when editing a symbol's location or orientation, the label locator can get in the way. |

For label options, both for vector layers and the live layer, there is now an additional option to display the label as the coordinates of the label point as lat/long in degrees, minutes, and seconds. Clearly the current project projection has to be set up to the projection that you want. |

When clicking on an object with the Data tool a dialogue box appears. Now, when this box is resized by dragging its boundary, string fields are resized to show the maximum amount of text so avoiding long strings being truncated unnecessarily. |

An additional action has been added under the "Tidying" section of "Vector actions" (and "Live layer actions") called "Line intersections as points", so if you have a set of lines that cross each other, or themselves, those intersection points are returned as point objects. |

1. When using the "live layer report" you can save the report to file by clicking on the report. The format of this file has been modified to include more information, including the style names. It is a comma-separated text file which can be opened and edited in, for instance, Excel.
2. Under layer set-up you have an option to link individual objects to documents. One option offered is htm and html files, however someone has pointed out that if you choose html files you get htm. This has now been fixed so that you can choose either. |

A user had a shape file that contained points including a couple of points with invalid coordinates - ie billions of kilometres. This caused MM to fall over when trying to import the shape file. The latest update ignores these points. |

1. DXF files are text files. Some text files end each line with a carriage return and a line feed while others only have a line feed. Map Maker is designed to distinguish between the two. However, we have recently come across DXF file that mis the two formats - ie most of the file only uses line feeds while other parts also include carriage returns. So MM has been modified to accomodate this absurdity.
2. Under "File - System set up - Preferences - Editing - Default vector layer label option", we have added the option "no label". |

Some tiff files, not many, store their data as colour separations rather than as a colour value for each pixel. Typically these are satellite images. In Map Maker some of these images were not registering the separations correctly. This has now been fixed. |

If you double click on a GEO file in Windows Explorer it opens Map Maker and opens the project (the GEO file). Similarly, you can run a command line with a geo file as a parameter, eg:
"c:\map maker\mmm.exe" "c:\maps\my map.geo"
Thats all fine if the geo file has been constructed from scratch. However, it seems that if the geo file has been archived to a zip file (using project manager) and then unzipped then it fails to open the project correctly - i.e. database links can be corrupted. This anomoly has now been fixed. |

In the latest update two problems are fixed:
1. The function under the "Edit - Live data menu" for the live layer to inherit attribute data from other layers was malfunctioning where the data was in a DBF file.
2. Under "Edit - live layer options - when drawing snap vertices to", when the option "infill vertices between ticks" was selected, under some circumstances, the program could incorrectly backtrack and include the wrong vertices. |

Under "Utilities - Vector utilities - Import file" a new option has been added of relevance to MM users in the UK - "OS VectorMap Local (*.vml)". Note that:
1. the Ordnance Survey supply these files without any file extension so you need to manually add the unofficial extension "vml".
2. VectorMap Local polygons perversely do not support polygons with holes in them, so where there are polygons with holes there is a connecting there and back line linking the outer ring to the inner one.
3. The feature (or style) system is different to that in OS MasterMap. We adjusted the style numbers so that the most important feature codes, such as building outlines, road centre lines, contours, water features, etc correspond to the styles found in the "uk_os.stl" style file |

When using "File - Print - Scaled print - Automatic - Edit side panel" (or "Edit bottom panel" for potrait format paper) and then using RTF panels it is possible for the RTF text to become corrupted. In these circumstances when returning to the panel editor it can cause a run-time error. The program has now been modified to not fall over in this situation. |

The latest update has two enhancements to the GPS utilities:
1. "Utilities - GPS utilities - Import data" now includes GPX
2. "Utilities - GPS utilities - Live GPS data" now includes an extra check box "Track on map". When checked the current GPS location (if the GPS is active) is shown on the screen with a red cross. If need be the map is automatically re-navigated to ensure that the GPS location is on screen. Remember to use, if need be, the "Change current projection" button to set the projection to be the same as that used in your map. If you close the "Live GPS data" window it will stop the GPS data, if you minimize it it will continue. |

In Nick Hopton's excellent tutorial on how to draw a map in GoogleEarth and transfer it to Map Maker (http://confound.me.uk/maps/Beginning_MM_1.pdf) he describes how to use the free "DNR Garmin" program to convert GoogleEarth KML files to Shape files which can then be imported into Map Maker. However, it seems that the most current update of GoogleEarth is rather naughtily inserting extraneous spaces and tab characters which "DNR Garmin" interprets as lat/long coordinates of zero/zero, which causes havoc.
So to bypass this issue we have added a KML import function to Map Maker Pro. Go to Utilities - Latitiude and Longitude utilities - WGS84 lat/long file to XY - vector -> choose your projection system (eg OS Map) -> OK -> In "Choose file or files", set "Files of type" to "GoogleEarth vectors (*.kml)", select your KML file -> OK -> "Choose or name a file", name a new DRA file -> OK.
The resulting DRA file can then be loaded as a layer in the normal way.

Since downloading & loading the 8th March update this morning into my previously working version of MM Pro it has begun misbehaving. OP system is XP Home Professional.
I opened a project just to view it and it failed to close down with displayed access violation messages.
A quick test of creating something allowed me to add a line into the live layer and save the geo project with the new name of test. However access violation errors stopped me saving the live layer.
It this likely to be a corruption local to my PC or a bug in the update?

Thanks Philippe. Glad to know it isn't just my system that doesn't like the new download so I have also now rolled back to "last known good version". My last, previous, download was time stamped 30 Jan and a delete/reinstall of that appears to have done the trick.
Guess there must be a bug in the latest release so will ignore it until we read here that it is fixed.

The latest update includes two modifications to Map Furniture:
1. When using "Button controls" (Map furniture) if you choose the file type as "htm" then the file will be displayed in your default web browser rather than in a separate small browser.
2. In "Title", "Rich text panel" and "Rich text file" Map Furniture you can now use "tokens". A token is automatically replaced by some special text. Tokens are enclosed in "<", and ">" symbols, so, for instance, if your text includes <scale> then this will be displayed as the current scale, eg 1:10000. The automatic tokens available are: <scale> - the current scale <coord> - the map centre coordinates <x> - the map centre X ordinate <y> - the map centre Y ordinate <os10> - the map centre expressed as a 10 number UK grid ref. <os8> - the map centre expressed as a 8 number UK grid ref. <os6> - the map centre expressed as a 6 number UK grid ref. <os4> - the map centre expressed as a 4 number UK grid ref. <date> - today's date <time> - the current time <windows user> - The currently logged on Windows user name <project title> - the title as defined in the project manager <project author> - the author as defined in the project manager <project date> - the project date as defined in the project manager <project organization> - the organization as defined in the project manager <project notes> - the notes as defined in the project manager
In addition, if you create a file called "token.txt" in the Map Maker directory you can create your own user tokens with whatever token names you want. The file looks like:
[user] organization=MegaCorp plc client=Mr Brown author=Ms Smith
So if you put <client> in your text it will be replaced with "Mr Brown".

When saving to a tiff file with either Map Maker or world file calibration Map Maker has always also included GeoTiff tags in the Tiff file, as a bonus. However, it appears that some image viewers in Windows 7 do not like GeoTiff tags - others like Photoshop have no problem - but we have now changed Map Maker so that geoTiff tags are only included when GeoTiff calibration is specifically requested. |
